1925 Rear View of Soledad Street

1925This portion of a 1925 Salinas map details a view from the rear of the even-numbered side of Soledad Street. The addresses run from 2 to 40.  Numbers 54, 60, and 66 are shown near the top of the page below the name “Soledad.” At top right, the “City Ware Ho.” (warehouse) of the Mitchell Sullivan Company indicates that warehouses for hay, potatoes, beans, and grain were actually in the Chinatown area. Shorty Lee’s son Albert recalled that he use to watch old Chinese men sorting potatoes in the warehouses. Note the large “Steel Gas Holder” that hovered over the backyards of some of the Soledad Street structures, including no. 20 (later 12½) Soledad Street which use to be the Hop Hing Lung Co. general merchandise store and residence of Shorty Lee. The portion of “Pajaro” Street shown near the bottom of the map is now known as Bridge Street. Wellington Lee
