1886 First Chinatown

The 1886 map shows the first “China Town,” established in 1872 in the vicinity of the current North Main Street underpass.  Situated one block away from today’s Chinatown, the first Chinatown was bordered on the west by a portion of San Juan Road (now North Main St.), on the east by a portion of Pajaro Street (now Bridge Street), on the north by Lake Street, and on the south by the Southern Pacific Railroad tracks. The map indicates a “Joss Ho.” (Joss House or Chinese temple), “Chinese Stores & Dwgs” (dwellings), and “Female Boarding” (a euphemism for brothel).  Wellington Lee
