Filipinos Building Community in Salinas Chinatown

April 26 — July 30, 2025

ACES Office/Gallery, 21 Soledad St., Suite A

Installation of Officers of the Filipino Community of Salinas Valley, 2/18/1950

Speedy Dado (Diosdado B. Posadas, 1906-1990) was a top-rated contender for the world’s flyweight, bantamweight, and featherweight championships. He won against the world bantamweight champion Panama Al Brown in 1932 at Los Angeles Olympic Stadium, and successfully defended his title in 1934 in San Francisco. Speedy was a favorite in the Central Coast Filipino community, and fought several matches in Watsonville during the height of the 1934 Salinas Lettuce Strikes.

Families and friends at a party in the N.R.A. Cafe on Soledad St. We believe the name of the cafe was a reference to Pres. Roosevelt’sNational Recovery Act. But we need more information. If you have more information about this cafe, please let us know! Photo: Wellington Lee Collection.
