The Republic Cafe & Revitalization of Salinas Chinatown
The idea of creating a Chinatown Cultural Center & Museum in the Republic Cafe building was proposed almost two decades ago. An NEH grant was awarded for initial planning and design, thanks to the efforts of CSUMB Prof. Emeritus Rina Benmayor.
The 2007/08 financial crisis halted our plans, but not our dreams. Then, in 2020, the Ahtye family, owners of the Republic Cafe and adjoining Lotus Inn, agreed to sell the building, as long as the historical qualities of the structure were retained.
In 2023 the City of Salinas purchased the historic Ahtye properties on Soledad St. across the street from the Republic Cafe (the old pool hall, residence, and gas station lot). In Fall of 2024, the City closed escrow on the old Republic Cafe building. ACES is now tasked to renovate the interior of the building to create the Chinatown Museum. It will be a huge project. We will need your help!
Revitalization of Salinas Chinatown is key to the RC project. Infrastructure improvements will provide a safe and pleasant environment for the community and retail, and will enhance the downtown area.
While we have always viewed Chinatown revitalization as a way to honor our ancestors’ legacies and preserve the history and cultures of the three communities (Chinese, Japanese, Filipino) of Chinatown—we know that the Cultural Center and Museum in Chinatown can serve people of all ethnic groups, ages, and economic status. Please join us in making our dream come true.
